Housed inside an auto-dimming rearview mirror is a light detection system. When bright lights appear, the mirror releases an electric pulse into a clear gel that sits behind the glass. This gel undergoes a chemical change that darkens it in response to the electric surge. Acting just like a pair of sunglasses to block harsh rays, this darkened gel absorbs the bright light while still allowing you to see the objects behind you reflected on the mirror's surface.
