Whether you just want your pet to accompany you on an outing or you’ve got an upcoming visit to the veterinarian, it’s a good idea to get your pet acquainted with riding in the car beforehand. Strange sounds, unfamiliar smells and the unnerving sense of motion can all be frightening to your pets, so familiarize them by spending a few minutes sitting inside the vehicle on a day when you’re not planning on going anywhere. Reward them with praise and a treat to make the experience positive.
When it comes time for your car trip, walk them or play with them to expend some of their excess energy first. Your pet should be in a carrier for their safety and yours. Place this on a towel to save your seats from pet hair and spills. If your trip is a long one, make sure you give them adequate food and water.
