The Mercedes-Benz G 550 is the granddaddy of SUVs, and dates back to 1979. It remains in production today and is still one of the - if not THE - toughest all-terrain vehicles available. Tom Voelk, auto critic for The New York Times recently took the 2016 G 550 out for a test drive. Click "play" in the video clip below to watch his full report.

After nearly four decades, the G 550 still maintains its primal appeal - particularly for those with serious off-road needs (or a desire to stand out in their neighborhood). At 5,800 pounds, it’s the weight of two compact sedans, but it roars to 60 miles an hour in 5.8 seconds before capping out at 130. The 550 feels most at home on craggy roads deep in the wilderness. A 7-speed automatic transmission has three locking differentials and a low range. This vehicle will get you out of virtually any tough situation.
