When Mercedes-Benz decided to add its S-Class lineup of vehicles, the luxury automaker considered making all of the models in the group hybrid vehicles. That didn't end up happening, but there are currently two hybrid models available. However, one of these is no longer sold in the U.S., and the other never has been. The new 2015 Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-In Hybrid, recently revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, however, will be coming Stateside next year.
Like most hybrids, the vehicle's regenerative braking system is a huge part of its personality. The effects of this system can be edited by choosing between four driving modes: Charge, E-Mode, Hybrid, and E-Save. Here's a further explanation of what these modes can do:
2015 Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-In Hybrid Model Driving Modes:
- E-Mode Mode: allows drivers to travel up to 18 miles on solely electric power
- E- Save Mode: saves the battery charge on high level for use in areas that provide congestion-tax breaks to plug-in hybrids and EVs
- Charge Mode: charges the battery while the vehicle is in motion, inefficient but saves the driver from plugging in
- Hybrid Mode: vehicles chooses the most efficient method and uses gasoline only when necessary to charge the battery
These modes allow the new car to be super efficient. In European fuel tests, the vehicle achieved over 90 mpg. This will likely lower a bit in the U.S., but it still gives drivers plenty of reason to look forward to the plug-in hybrid's arrival here at i.g. Burton & Co Inc., located in Milford, DE.
